Dental insurance in the Netherlands: compare all insurers (2026)

Last checked 11 September 2026 · 2026 premiums for adults · Order explained in how we compare

Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering) does not pay for regular dental care for adults. Check-ups, fillings, root canal treatment and crowns are only reimbursed if you add dental insurance (tandartsverzekering) to your health insurance. In 2026 a dental module costs roughly €7 to €80 a month and reimburses €100 to €1,500 a year. Children under 18 are covered by basic insurance for most dental care.

On this page you compare the dental insurance of all Dutch health insurers, see which insurers offer service in English, and read how to take out cover as an expat or international student.

Every module above is supplementary insurance: you need basic health insurance (basisverzekering) with the same insurer to take it out. Premiums are 2026 prices for adults; children under 18 are normally covered free on a parent’s policy. The compulsory deductible (eigen risico) never applies to dental cover from a supplementary policy. Prices checked on 11 September 2026.

What does basic health insurance cover at the dentist?

TreatmentUnder 1818 and older
Check-ups, cleaning, X-rays, fluoride and sealingCoveredNot covered
Fillings, root canal treatment, extractionsCoveredNot covered
Crowns, bridges and implantsNot covered, except for missing or lost front teethNot covered (implants only to hold dentures in a severely shrunken toothless jaw)
Braces (orthodontics)Not covered, except for very severe developmental disordersNot covered
Full denturesCovered, with a 25% own contribution
Specialist oral surgeryCoveredCovered, deductible applies

The compulsory deductible (eigen risico, €385 in 2026) does not apply to dental care for children or to dental insurance. It does apply to the dental care adults receive from basic insurance, such as dentures and specialist oral surgery.

Is dental insurance worth it?

Dentists in the Netherlands may not charge more than the maximum tariffs set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). A routine check-up with two small X-rays and 10 minutes of cleaning costs at most €104.15 in 2026. If that is all you need, a €250 module costing €120 to €210 a year usually costs more than it pays out. Dental insurance starts to pay off when you expect a filling, a root canal treatment or a crown.

Treatment (NZa maximum tariffs)20262027
Check-up with 2 small X-rays and 10 minutes of cleaning€104.15€107.31
Two-surface composite filling with anaesthesia€112.52€115.94
Root canal treatment, 3 canals€559.58€570.40
Crown, excluding technical costs (€150 to €800)€463.59€477.65
Implant with crown, excluding technical costs€1,472.94€1,528.16

Do the maths: with the dental insurance calculator you see what you would get back per module. All prices per treatment are on dentist costs in the Netherlands.

How dental insurance works in the Netherlands

  • It is supplementary insurance. Dental insurance is an aanvullende verzekering on top of basic insurance. Almost every insurer, including Zilveren Kruis, FBTO, CZ, VGZ, Menzis, OHRA, a.s.r. and DSW, only sells it to people who also have its basic insurance.
  • Maximum per calendar year. Each module pays up to a fixed amount per year, such as €250 or €500. Above that, you pay the dentist yourself.
  • Reimbursement percentage. Some modules pay 100%, others 75% or 80%. Many pay check-ups at 100% and other treatments at 75%.
  • Acceptance. Insurers must accept everyone for basic insurance, but not for supplementary insurance. Modules up to €500 usually accept everyone without medical questions. Extensive modules of €1,000 or more often ask about your teeth or a statement from your dentist.
  • Waiting periods. For regular dental care they are rare. They are common for braces (often 12 months) and, at some insurers, for crowns, bridges and implants in the most extensive modules.
  • Once a year. You can change or switch per 1 January. Newcomers can take out insurance when they start living or working in the Netherlands.
  • Dental accidents. Many modules also pay after an accident, often up to €10,000, for example at Anderzorg, VinkVink, ONVZ, Nationale-Nederlanden and Interpolis.

Taking out dental insurance as an expat or international student

If you come to live or work in the Netherlands, you usually have to take out Dutch basic health insurance as soon as possible, and no later than 4 months after arriving. If you take it out later, you are not insured retroactively and you may be fined. Most insurers let you choose supplementary insurance, including a dental module, in the same application. Not sure whether you are obliged to take out Dutch insurance, for example as a student or posted worker? Check Government.nl.

Most online application forms are in Dutch. According to their own websites, these insurers offer the most in English: HollandZorg (aimed at internationals, all communication and documents in English), ONVZ (service in English and an English application link), DSW and Stad Holland (English-speaking customer service and app), and CZ and Menzis (English websites). At a.s.r. the advisers speak English, but letters are in Dutch. This glossary helps you through a Dutch form:

Dental insurance for children and braces

At most insurers children under 18 are co-insured free of charge on a parent’s policy, and basic insurance covers most of their dental care. Braces are the exception: basic insurance does not cover them, not even for children. For that you need supplementary insurance with orthodontic cover, usually with a 12-month waiting period. Costs and cover per insurer are on orthodontic insurance in the Netherlands.

Switching dental insurance for 2027

Insurers publish their 2027 premiums by 12 November 2026. You can then switch until 31 December. If you take out basic and supplementary insurance with a new insurer, it cancels both old policies for you. We update this comparison as soon as the new premiums are known. Read taking out or switching dental insurance for the dates and steps, or see the best dental insurance per situation and all modules per insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dutch health insurance cover the dentist?

Only for children under 18 and for a few treatments for adults, such as full dentures (with a 25% own contribution) and specialist oral surgery. Regular dental care for adults, such as check-ups, fillings, root canal treatment and crowns, is only reimbursed with dental insurance.

How much does dental insurance cost in the Netherlands?

In 2026 a module with about €250 cover costs roughly €10 to €18 a month, €500 cover about €23 to €34, and €1,000 or more about €41 to €80. Premiums for 2027 are published by 12 November 2026.

Can I take out dental insurance with a different insurer than my basic insurance?

Legally you may combine insurers, but in practice this is hardly possible: almost all insurers, including Zilveren Kruis, FBTO, CZ, VGZ, Menzis, OHRA, a.s.r. and DSW, only sell dental insurance together with their own basic insurance.

Is there a waiting period for dental insurance?

For regular dental care usually not. Waiting periods mainly apply to braces (often 12 months) and, at some insurers, to crowns, bridges and implants in the most extensive modules, such as VGZ and Univé Tand Best (12 months).

Which Dutch insurers offer dental insurance in English?

No insurer arranges everything in English, but HollandZorg, ONVZ, CZ, Menzis, DSW and Stad Holland offer the most: English websites, documents or customer service. Zilveren Kruis and VGZ have English information pages and an app in English. Most online application forms are completely or partly in Dutch.

When can I take out or change dental insurance?

Usually once a year, per 1 January: from the moment the new premiums are published (by 12 November) until 31 December. Some insurers, such as Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, a.s.r., FBTO and Salland, also let you change supplementary insurance until 31 January. If you are new to the Netherlands, you take out insurance when you arrive.

We may receive a fee if you take out insurance via a link on our site. This does not affect the information on this page. Read how we compare.
