Dentist costs in the Netherlands: prices per treatment for 2026 and 2027
In the Netherlands every dentist uses the same price list: the maximum tariffs set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). A dentist may charge less, never more, and the prices are the same whether or not you are insured. A periodic check-up costs at most €28.51 in 2026 and €29.37 in 2027. Most tariffs rise by about 3% in 2027, but root canal treatment and implants change more.

The 2026 examples for check-up, filling, root canal and crown come from the Royal Dutch Dental Association (KNMT); the others are our own calculations with the NZa maximum tariffs. Technical costs for a crown range from about €150 to €800.
Good to know about dentist bills in the Netherlands
- Estimate above €250. For a treatment that costs more than €250, your dentist must give you a written estimate (begroting) in advance.
- Emergency dentist outside office hours. You pay a consultation (C003) plus the evening, night and weekend surcharge (C021): €60.02 in 2026 and €61.83 in 2027, plus the treatment itself.
- Technical costs. For crowns, bridges, implants, dentures and braces the dental lab costs are passed on one-to-one. You may ask for the lab invoice.
- Children under 18. Basic health insurance pays most dental care for children, without deductible. Crowns, bridges, implants and braces are not covered.
- Adults. Basic insurance does not cover regular dental care. You pay the dentist yourself, or claim it from dental insurance, up to the maximum of your module.
Rising tariffs, same maximum: because tariffs go up, a module with a fixed maximum covers slightly fewer treatments in 2027. If your treatments cost exactly €250 in 2026, the same treatments cost about €258 in 2027. Premiums for 2027 are published by 12 November 2026.

Can a Dutch dentist charge more than the NZa tariff?
No. The NZa tariffs are maximum prices that apply to every dentist, for insured and uninsured patients alike. A dentist may charge less. Material and technical costs for crowns, implants, dentures and braces are charged on top.
What does a filling cost in the Netherlands?
A two-surface composite filling with anaesthesia and a rubber dam costs at most €112.52 in 2026 and €115.94 in 2027. A multi-surface filling costs more: the tariff alone is €120.03 in 2026.
Why is root canal treatment more expensive in 2027?
From 2027 the separate surcharge for rotary nickel-titanium instruments (E04, €59.25) no longer exists. Those costs are now included in the root canal tariffs E13 to E17, so for example E13 rises from €135.03 to €191.68.
Does Dutch health insurance pay the dentist for adults?
Only in exceptional cases, such as full dentures (25% own contribution) and specialist oral surgery. For check-ups, fillings, root canals and crowns you need dental insurance.
