Best dental insurance in the Netherlands 2026: the best choice per situation
There is no single best dental insurance: the best choice depends on how much dental care you expect, which basic insurance you have and whether you want to avoid medical questions. Below we list, per situation, the Dutch dental modules that offer the most cover for their premium in 2026. We only look at premium, maximum reimbursement, reimbursement percentage, acceptance, waiting periods and service in English. Whether an insurer pays us a fee plays no role.

How to choose the best dental insurance
- Estimate your costs. Only check-ups? Then the dentist costs you about €100 to €150 a year without insurance, and a module rarely pays off. Do you expect fillings, a root canal treatment or a crown? Then a module with €500 or more can be worth it. Use the calculator.
- Start from your basic insurance. Almost all insurers only sell dental cover together with their own basic insurance. Compare the total premium of basic plus dental insurance, not the dental module alone.
- Look at percentage and maximum together. 100% up to €250 means at most €250 back. 75% up to €500 means you only reach €500 back with €667 in costs.
- Check acceptance and waiting periods. Expecting a big treatment soon? Choose a module without medical questions and without a waiting period for crowns and implants.
- Check the language. If you do not speak Dutch, choose an insurer with English service or documents. See the English service column in our comparison.
Tip: dental insurance is not a savings account. You pay the premium every month, and in a year without treatments you get nothing back. Compare what you pay per year with what you realistically expect to claim.
Best dental insurance for children
Children under 18 do not need a dental module: basic insurance covers most of their dental care, and at most insurers they are co-insured free of charge on the supplementary insurance of a parent. What matters for children is orthodontic cover, because braces are not covered by basic insurance. The highest reimbursements for braces are in the supplementary packages of ONVZ, Zilveren Kruis, VGZ and De christelijke zorgverzekeraar. See orthodontic insurance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best dental insurance in the Netherlands in 2026?
There is no single best dental insurance for everyone. The best choice depends on your expected dental costs, your basic insurance and whether you want to avoid medical questions. For a small budget with 100% reimbursement, FBTO Tand €250 and a.s.r. TandBeter score well; for €500 cover, Menzis TandVerzorgd 500 and Interpolis GebitActief €500.
Which dental insurance reimburses 100%?
Among others FBTO (Tand €250, €500 and €750), a.s.r. TandBeter, ONVZ Tandfit A, B and C, Zilveren Kruis Tand 4 sterren and Nationale-Nederlanden TandenGaaf €1000 and €1500. Many other modules reimburse check-ups at 100% and other treatments at 75% or 80%.
Which dental insurance has no medical questions?
Most modules up to €500 accept everyone, for example FBTO, OHRA, VGZ, Univé, Salland and Zilveren Kruis up to Tand 2 sterren. VGZ and Univé Tand Best even offer €1,000 without dental selection, but with a 12-month waiting period for crowns, bridges and implants.
What is the best dental insurance for expats?
For expats, the best insurance combines good cover with service you understand. ONVZ offers service in English and an English application link, CZ has an English website and English conditions, and HollandZorg arranges all communication in English. Compare the total premium of basic plus dental insurance.
Is the most expensive dental insurance the best?
Not necessarily. An extensive module only pays off if you actually have high dental costs. With only check-ups, a small module or no dental insurance at all is usually cheaper.
